The aspiring parliamentary candidate for Busumbala Constituency under United Democratic Party (UDP), Momodou Sabally, has been rejected by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The rejection of Mr. Sabally’s nomination came after the UDP strongman submitted all his credentials to the electoral body in the West Coast Region. According to the electoral body, Sabally was rejected in line with section 90 (1) (E) of the Constitution of the Gambia.

Sabally was one time secretary general and head of the Civil Service from 2013 to 2014 under former president Yahya Jammeh’s rule. He was also appointed the director general of the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) and managing director and editor-in-chief of the defunct Daily Observer.

Janneh Commission, a former commission of inquiry that was constituted to investigate the illegal financial transactions of former president Jammeh indicted Sabally in connection with millions of dalasis theft of public resources. The commission recommendation and the government's White Paper barred Sabally from holding public office.

Meanwhile, the UDP has a chance to back another aspiring candidate to replace Sabally before closing hours of nomination on Sunday.
