Addressing a training session on hate speech held at the Bakadaji Hotel for representatives of the Independent Electoral Commission, NHRC Chairman Emmanuel Joof, emphasised the importance of adhering to the Peace Accord and conducting political activities in a manner that promotes harmony and mutual respect.
Mr Joof, also highlighted the critical role the IEC, IPC, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and other stakeholders play in strengthening democracy and cultivating an environment of peace and harmony.
He urged political leaders to tone down their rhetoric as the 2026 presidential elections approach, reminding them of their commitment to the Peace Accord.
“As we move towards the 2026 presidential elections, the NHRC also wishes to remind all political leaders and their parties and politicians of the Peace Accord they signed and to tone down their rhetoric and conduct their affairs in a peaceful manner and desist from utterances that are divisive with the potential of fanning the flames of disunity and hatred,” said Chairman Joof.
He further encouraged active engagement and mutual learning among participants, stressing that their collective efforts can significantly impact the promotion of a culture of respect, dignity, and understanding. "Together, we can make a significant impact by promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and mutual understanding,” he said. “I encourage you to engage actively, share your insights, and learn from one another as we work towards a common goal."
Concluding, Chairman Joof emphasised the long-term benefits of their efforts in preventing hate speech, describing it as a crucial step towards creating a future where every individual is valued and respected. "By equipping ourselves with the knowledge and skills to prevent hate speech, we are taking a crucial step towards a future where every individual is valued and respected,” he said.
Samba Baldeh, Co-Chair of the Inter-party Committee, expressed deep concern over the rising instances of hate speech on social media, highlighting its detrimental effects on national peace and stability.
He urged Gambians to preserve the country’s peace and stability and called on all political parties to adhere to their public commitments and the IPC code of conduct.
Additionally, Baldeh implored the media to exercise its power responsibly by providing balanced reporting on issues of hate speech.
