Former educationist, Rev. Fr. Bruno Toupan died on Monday 25 March 2024 at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul after a brief illness.

His demise has attracted spate of tributes, hailing him as a real educator and kind hearted individual who had lived to elevate humanity.

“If one says that he was born for others, one might not be exaggerating or perhaps not even be too far from the truth,” says Hassan Gibril.

“The highly respected and much loved Gambian Catholic priest has breathed his last this morning, a day after the world celebrated Palm Sunday in prayer and meditation over the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.”

“But his good deeds cannot be forgotten in a hurry or jiffy.”

“Even to say that philanthropy was his calling, would amount to simply repeating the obvious.”

Alieu Jagne writes: “At about 2pm Taipei Time today, I started receiving messages that my mentor has passed. I write with a heavy heart to pay tribute to one of the greatest men I have met in life, Father Bruno Toupan. This man meant a lot to me.”

“He knew me, JAGNE (as he always called me) in my ninth grade. I remember promising him Aggregate 06 right after the GABECE exams and he kept reminding me about this promise every time we met before the results.”

“When this promise became a reality in September 2008, Father did the unthinkable and decided to pay for the School Fees of everyone with Agg. 06-12 irrespective of what Junior School, religion or family you are from for the rest of our Senior School years. I never paid for a thing and got every book I wanted.”

“He remained a disciplinarian, protector of his students and had a firm grip on the affairs of the school.”

Meanwhile, the Bishop of Banjul Most Rev Dr. Gabriel Mendy C.S.S.p, Priests, Religious and the Faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Banjul in an obituary extended heartfelt condolences to his family members, friends and relatives in The Gambia and abroad.
