Press release

The Information Commission of The Gambia hereby urges all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to designate Information Officers in compliance with the Access to Information Act, 2021.

Under the provisions of the Act, the Head of every public institution in consultation with the Minister responsible for that institution is required to designate a suitable officer for that body as the Information Officer for the purposes of the Act. Furthermore, the law provides that the Head of a public body may also designate a Deputy Information Officer to support this function.

In accordance with the Act, the names of all designated Information and Deputy Information Officers must be published in the Gazette. The Information Commission therefore calls on all public bodies to submit the names of their nominees to the Commission no later than 15th November 2025 to facilitate timely gazetting and ensure compliance with the law.

It is important to note that individuals deployed to government institutions by the Department of Information Services serve as Communication Officers, not Information Officers as defined under the Access to Information Act, 2021

Consequently, each public body remains legally obligated to designate a senior or middle level staff member of that institution as the Information Officer and, where applicable, a Deputy Information Officer.

The Information Commission appreciates your understanding and cooperation as we work collectively to strengthen transparency, accountability, and access to information in The Gambia.
