Sulayman Jammeh, chairman of the National Assembly Select Committee for Regional Government, Land, IEC and Ombudsman has said that a proper management of lands would generate a lot of revenue for the government.

The Bundungkakunda National Assembly Member (NAM) made this statement during an interview with journalists at the National Assembly recently.

“Lands are fixed resources, and if it is properly managed, it can generate a lot of revenue for government,” Hon Jammeh said, adding: “This can only be achieved, if government should introduce a new system of documentations or registration.”

He said there are lots of land disputes in many areas, a report of which, he added, captured everything they had discussed as deputies.

According to Hon Jammeh, the document they discussed focused on management of land to mainly assess the measures put in place by the Ministry of Regional Government for efficient and effective land registration and documentation.

“So these are all areas we checked, and in fact we were able to highlight some of the gaps in relation to the land documentation and registration,” he said, adding that the Physical Planning department did “lack the expertise, and the bureaucracy involves is very long”.

Concluding, he said: “So I think we need to look at that, and there is also no correct transfer of lands from the village heads to the buyers, which I think the ministry should have also looked at and provided them with standard way of transferring of lands.”
