Diomaye won the election with 54.28% on Sunday 24 March 2024 and contested with 18 candidates. Fifteen African state presidents will be present during his inauguration including The Gambia’s president, Adama Barrow.
According to sources, the new president would revamp the government by downsizing the number of ministries from 39 and close down duplicated government offices and reduce government departments to cut spending. He will announce his prime minister tomorrow, Wednesday, which will be followed by the formation of the cabinet on Friday.
He is 44 years old and the youngest elected president in Africa. Prior to his election as Senegal’s fifth president, he worked as a tax inspector and as part of the country’s laws, he declared his assets which was published by the press before the swearing in ceremony. He is married with two wives and four children.
His plans are to fight corruption, create employment opportunities, strengthen bilateral cooperation, change the CFA to a local currency and reduce the government departments while eliminating the long standing accumulation of jobs by an individual. It is a norm in Senegal that one person can hold more than one position such as being a minister, a mayor and MP at the same time and earning more than one salary.
Senegal will open its doors for economic integration with international partners and would like to reiterate that, the “the country will hold its place” in being a friendly, safe and reliable ally to any partner who engages them for a better future for the Senegalese. He plans to set up an anti-corruption commission to investigate effectively, corrupt officials who have been involved in corruption and deal with them accordingly.
