The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has set up a panel to probe the tragic accident that killed eight young people at Jarumeh Koto village in the Central River Region (CRR), The Point has been reliably informed.

The accident that occurred last weekend claimed eight lives with many others wounded and are currently hospitalised at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.

The driver of the vehicle is still under police custody as investigation into the matter continues.

An anonymous source in CRR who was contacted for comments confirmed the development, saying "the SIU of the GPF has formed a panel to probe into the tragic accident.  They are currently in the region and are doing massive investigation with a view to get to the bottom of the incident."

"The driver is yet to be charged. The SIU at the police headquarters in Banjul is investigating the matter currently. I am sure after the investigation, the police will come out with a preferable charge," our source said.

Last week’s accident has also sparked debate among Gambians within and outside with many calling for swift action in putting up measures to halt the rampant accidents in the country.
