The new United States Ambassador to The Gambia, Laurence Socha, arrived in Banjul on Monday to begin his tenure as Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy.

He was welcomed upon arrival by Mr. Bernard Mendy, Director of the American Desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, and Mr. Omar Sawh, Deputy Chief of Protocol.

Ambassador Socha is the 22nd U.S. Ambassador to The Gambia since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and The Gambia in 1965. The two countries share longstanding ties and a commitment to democratic governance, economic opportunity, regional security, and strong people-to-people connections.

A career member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Ambassador Socha has nearly 20 years of diplomatic experience spanning Africa, the Americas, and Europe. Over the course of his career, he has represented the United States in 12 countries across four continents.

As Ambassador, he will lead U.S. diplomatic engagement with The Gambia and work to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between the two countries.

In the coming days, Ambassador Socha will present copies of his credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, before presenting his Letter of Credence to President Adama Barrow.

Ambassador Socha said he looks forward to getting to know The Gambia and its people and to working together to strengthen the enduring friendship and close partnership between the United States and The Gambia.
