A new national platform to protect and support human rights defenders has been established in The Gambia.

The Human Rights Defenders Network – The Gambia (HRDN The Gambia) was formed with the support of the West Africa Human Rights Defenders Network. Its formation was facilitated by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS).

The Network brings together defenders through an independent, inclusive, and non-profit national platform.

Human rights defenders work in many ways. They document abuses, support victims, investigate matters of public interest, speak against discrimination and corruption, and help communities claim their rights. They may be activists, journalists, whistleblowers, lawyers, or members of community organisations.

What unites them, the Network said, is their peaceful commitment to protecting human dignity. Yet that work can expose them to intimidation, harassment, arbitrary arrest, online abuse, and other reprisals, particularly for those working in rural communities or on sensitive issues.

HRDN The Gambia has been formed to meet these challenges through solidarity and practical support. Its constitution sets out plans to coordinate defenders across the country, strengthen their skills, monitor violations and advocate for laws and practices that protect civic space. It also calls for rapid response, referrals, and assistance when defenders are at risk.

The Network's vision is of a just, democratic, and inclusive Gambia where defenders can operate freely and safely, and everyone enjoys dignity, equality and justice. Its work is grounded in the Gambian Constitution and in African and international human rights standards.

Independence, non-violence, confidentiality, and accountability are among its stated values.

The executive membership reflects a commitment to broad participation. Madi Jobarteh serves as Chairperson, Aji Isatou Nyan as Vice Chairperson, Isatou Jawara as Treasurer and Yankuba Keita as Coordinator. The executive also includes Omar Sanyang as Youth Representative, Oumie Jagne as Women Representative, Fatoumatta Jallow as Persons with Disabilities Representative and Aji Fatou Bah as Children Representative.

The formation of HRDN The Gambia creates an opportunity to turn shared concern into coordinated action, the statement said.

The Network will be officially launched on 10 December 2026, coinciding with International Human Rights Day. It will embark on a series of introductory engagements with various stakeholders while undertaking media and social media campaigns to popularize its work.
