Italian leisure airline Neos Air has launched its first direct flight from Italy to The Gambia, marking a significant boost to the country’s international air connectivity.

The maiden flight, which arrived on Wednesday afternoon, 1 April 2026, at Banjul International Airport, received a colourful welcome featuring a cultural reception and the traditional water cannon salute reserved for inaugural flights.

Officials from the Gambia Tourism Board, Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, Gambia International Airlines, Air Rep Services, Neos Gambia, and other tourism stakeholders attended the reception.

For the initial phase of operations, Neos Air will operate one weekly flight between Italy and The Gambia, with the possibility of increasing frequency depending on demand.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of the GCAA, Obi Njie said the new route represents progress and growing confidence in The Gambia’s aviation sector.

“The launch of this direct flight expands our international connectivity and creates new opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment,” he said.

Tourism and aviation officials described the route as a major step in strengthening travel links between Italy and The Gambia and boosting tourist arrivals.

Also speaking at the event, Ebrima Njie of Neos Air in Senegal described the launch as the result of strong collaboration among stakeholders.

“What we are celebrating today is the collective effort of all partners involved – including GIA, GTBoard, GCAA and Air Rep Services – whose cooperation has made it possible to welcome Neos Air to The Gambia,” he said.

Musa Musa of Air Rep Services also thanked the key partners who supported the initiative.

“This is a great achievement for The Gambia, linking the country directly with Italy. Many Gambians and travellers will benefit from this connection, and we hope to see the service expand to more than one flight per week in the near future,” he said.

Representing the management of Gambia International Airlines, officials expressed delight at the arrival of the airline and welcomed the new partnership aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation sector.

Lazar Kujabi, Officer in Charge, Marketing at the Gambia Tourism Board, said the new connection was the result of strong collaboration among stakeholders and assured that efforts would continue to support the airline and increase flight frequency in the future.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the new route will further promote Destination Gambia in the European market and enhance the country’s tourism growth.
