In what is believed to be the last and final leg of its nationwide initiative aimed at updating all prepaid metres in line with international standards, the National Water and Electricity Services (NAWEC) on Monday met with councillors within the Kanifing Municipality ahead of the full implementation of TID Rollover initiative within the Greater Banjul Area.

The TID Rollover in simple terms is an update on all prepayment meters across the world every 30 years which The Gambia is not an exception. The interface held at the Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC) Conference Hall, marks the official beginning of electricity meter resetting within KM as seen in the rest of other regions across the country.

The initiative which starts on July 10th 2024, according to officials, is a simple process in that NAWEC officials will do their update at their end, while consumers complete the rest and final resetting of their metres.

Welcoming the gathering, Binta Janneh-Jallow, deputy mayor of KMC, thanked NAWEC officials for reaching out to engage them on this important upcoming initiative in the municipality.

She urged councillors to disseminate the information gathered at the session and inform their respective communities to ensure a smooth conduct of the initiative.

Ebrima Jobe, project manager TID Roll Over, NAWEC, explained that this is a community engagement with the representatives of various communities within the municipality and to give firsthand information regarding meter updating also referred to as TID Roll Over initiative.

"It’s an engagement that we had in other parts of the country and we are due for resetting in KM."

Jobe indicated that it is a necessary initiative and something that is not peculiar to The Gambia but a universal event where all prepaid meters across the globe have to be updated to continue to function.

"But like you and I would know, all those using modern devices now like telephones and even apps like WhatsApp and stuffs like that are periodically are subjected to updates. And these metres are not exception as the only difference is that the life span for metres to be updated takes 30 years."

He added that once updated they are valid for the next 30 years, further advising consumers to immediately upload cash power ‘let them upload and avoid keeping it for future use.’

"Once we effect the updating at our end, the token that is lying and not inputted into the meters would be rendered invalid."

This new metre updating, according to him, is simple in that whenever they are done at their end, each time the consumer buys the cash power token for use; it will display three different twenty-digit tokens.

Enter the first one and allow sometime, enter the second one and give it second before one slots the last twenty-digit number. The event also witnessed question and answer session, where councillors raised questions of concerns.
