The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) and the Department of Water Resources (DWR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance water management quality in The Gambia.

The partnership aims to improve water quality monitoring, infrastructure development, and capacity building.

The signing ceremony was held at the NAWEC headquarters in Kanifing on Tuesday, attended by the senior managements for both departments.

The initiative aligns with The Gambia's efforts to achieve universal access to clean water and improve public health. The partnership is expected to benefit communities across the country, ensuring reliable access to high-quality water.

Mr. Lamin Mai Touray, director, Department of Water Resources (DWR), said access to safe and reliable drinking water is fundamental to public health, economic development, and national resilience.

He added that the MoU provides a clear and practical framework through which the two institutions will jointly contribute to achieving the national priority.

Mr. Touray said DWR and NAWEC will collaborate to facilitate systematic water quality testing across the entire water supply chain, from source to distribution.

"This collaboration will ensure that water supplied to communities across the country meets national and international safety and quality standards, thereby safeguarding public health and reinforcing confidence in national water supply system," he noted.

Omar Sanneh, head of Water and Sewerage Business Unit at NAWEC, broke down the MOU's framework, highlighting its importance in boosting water management quality. He is optimistic about the collaboration impact on The Gambia's water sector.

NAWEC's Managing Director Gallo Saidy echoed similar sentiment, emphasising the power of collaboration in ensuring community access to clean water. He noted that the partnership aims to improve water quality monitoring, infrastructure development, and capacity building.
