Sulayman Jammeh, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Bundung Constituency has called on NAWEC to mitigate poor water supply in his constituency. He has however recently provided 6 boreholes as constituency temporal measures to ease the situation ahead of the ongoing water supply project by the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC).

In an interview with The Point, Hon. Jammeh said his action is meant to complement government’s efforts to alleviate the suffering posed by inadequate water supply in his constituency. He added that after the president’s intervention, he together with community have identified three   spaces for possible boreholes. However, said they could not have a good location due to high concentration of rain water.

“NAWEC decided to drill a borehole at Nema Wasloum, which is currently drilled. Laying of pipes and connecting them to the network are yet to be done,” he said, while reaffirming the government’s commitment. He urged NAWEC to fast track the process noting that the community of Bundung has long been suffering from lack of water.

“Basically water is an issue here and a big challenge in some parts of Bundung especially the densely populated areas, and there are so many people with taps in their homes, but they couldn’t have access to water because of the low pressure of water supply.”

Hon. Jammeh reiterated that water supply has been an issue for many years now; something they have been pursuing thanks to the collaboration and efforts of Bundung Community and the government.

He revealed that at the community level they were able to pay for the provision of 29 community stand pipes from his constituency development fund for water service connections.

“I believe that if all these taps come with good pressures, access to water will not be a problem. Water is life, and this is why we want to put emphasis on water supply.”

Mr. Jammeh recounted details of his intervention in improving water supply during his tenure in office as the ward councilor by providing over 80 community stand pipes leaving the beneficiaries with adequate water supply.

This time, he is poised to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the situation is remedied.

“We are hopeful that the situation will be addressed. I do not want to relent while my people are suffering. With all our commitments together with the government, all I want is the service provider (NAWEC) to also make more commitment towards addressing the situation.”
