The National Assembly Member (NAM) for Kiang West, Hon. Lamin Ceesay, has issued a bold and controversial warning ahead of the much anticipated tabling of the draft constitution, declaring that if the bill is not withdrawn by July 7, lawmakers should prepare to reject it outright and “think about another constitution.”

Speaking during the debate on the State of the Nation Address, Hon, Ceesay made it clear that he and others are ready to oppose the draft if it fails to meet the expectations and aspirations of the Gambian people.

“We will return to this chamber on the very day the bill is laid here Insha’Allah. We must all witness that moment. But if that bill is not withdrawn, Wallahi, think about another constitution,” Kiang West legislator further warned.

He argued that constitution-building is not merely about text but about process, transparency, and public interest.

“Look, we are not here to favour any political party or individual. Constitution making is bigger than that. It’s a scientific process that must reflect the true needs of the people,” he stressed.

The lawmaker also hinted that there are troubling elements within the draft, suggesting it contains hidden provisions that could serve narrow interests.

“In fact, I pray the motion for the second reading is rejected right away so that we don’t even debate it. Because if we start debating that bill, it won’t end well. That’s my warning.”

The draft constitution is expected to be tabled before the lawmakers on July 7 after several delays.
