Motorcyclist kills police officer at checkpoint

Segt.  Salifu Touray, a traffic officer of The Gambia Police Force (GPF) was on Friday allegedly hit and killed by a motorcyclist who refused to stop at a police checkpoint at Giroba in the Upper River Region (URR).  

The motorcyclist, now identified as Mustapha Sillah of Sabou Sirreh village, is currently detained at the Basse Police Station as investigation into the matter continues. 

A source who spoke to The Point on the condition of anonymity has confirmed the development. 

"The incident happened on Friday evening 13 October 2023. The motorcyclist first passed-by the police checkpoint while heading to Kunda village and refused to stop," our source explained. 

"When he was also returning from Kundam in the Tumana District in URR, he was again asked to stop by the police but refused and decided to ran into the police officer who was on duty at the checkpoint leaving him with serious injuries," our source added.  

"The deceased, Salifu Touray sustained injuries on his head and was bleeding seriously.  His two legs were also broken. He was rushed to the Basse Health Center but later referred to Bansang Hospital in the Central River Region for further medical treatment.  Unfortunately, the traffic police officer could not make it and he was pronounced dead on Saturday," our source postulated.
