With heartbreak and deep sadness, renowned Gambian human rights and migration activist residing in Germany, Moro Yaya Yapha, has mourned the distressing boat tragedy that occurred recently in the Mbour area, about eighty kilometers from the capital Dakar, Senegal.

According to the renowned international activist, whose effort to raise concerns over the mass exodus from Africa to Europe has been immense, reports indicated that more than 100 people are believed to have died while travelling in a fishing canoe from the coast of Mbour on their voyage to Spain, across the Atlantic Ocean via Mauritania and Morocco.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing for survivors or bodies.

“This is a terrible and devastating loss for the people of Senegal and indeed a great loss for the entire African continent,” he said

“At the same time,” Yapha added, “it is sad and disheartening that Senegal – an inspiring socioeconomic and political hub in West Africa, with a young population and promising leadership – finds its young people risking everything, including their lives to reach European soil in search of a better life and greener pastures.”
