Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) on Monday laid the foundation stone of Ya Fatou Njie Market at Talinding north ward in the Kanifing Municipality.

The market is valued at seven million dalasis (D7M). It is part of KMC market expansion and infrastructural development programme.

The project is funded by Area Metropolitana De Barcelona and Mbolo Association, a local organisation aimed at bringing development to the doorsteps of Gambians.

In his statement, Bensouda expressed delight on what he called milestone development in the municipality, especially Talinding.

He said the people of Talinding should be more grateful to the council under his leadership. He justified that residents have two markets under his leadership.

The KMC leader commended all those who contributed to the implementation of the project, while giving a special thanks to his development partners in Barcelona and Mbolo Association in The Gambia for supporting the council financially.

“Many ward councilors were advocating for the project to be taken to their various wards but I deemed it necessary to bring the project for (people of Talinding),” he said.

Representing the head of Talinding, Modou Lamin Badjie commended the leadership of KMC for coming up with this laudable project in the community.

He said the mayor of KMC has fulfilled his promise of representing the entire municipality despite winning under United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket.

The facility, when completed would go a long way to boost socio-economic growth in the area. “We are grateful for this development,” he added.

Mai Colley, president of Talinding Market Committee, said construction of the market would no doubt help the vendors to carry out their business effectively.

She expressed gratitude to the leadership of KMC for the development.

Babucarr Mansally, ward councilor for Talinding North Ward, commended KMC and its partners for implementing “this important project.”

“I am definitely happy with this development and I am commending all for their various contribution towards the implementation of the project,” he said

Lamin Jammeh, the chairman of the Talinding Market Committee, urged the council to put mechanisms in place to ensure vendors continue selling while construction of the market progresses.

“As long as money is available there is a greater need for the work to be done quickly,” he opined.

Musa Badjie, National Assembly Member (NAM) for Talinding Constituency, said there is no need for changing the council’s leadership in the upcoming local government elections, justifying that Mayor Bensouda is working immensely towards the development of the municipality.

He commended Mayor Bensouda and his development partners for what he called laudable achievement in the community.

In her vote of thanks on behalf of Talinding residents, Fatoumatta Jallow thanked the leadership of KMC for what she called “milestone achievement” in the community, while praying for continuous development of KMC as a whole.
