Man docked for stealing D57,300 worth of items

One Abdou Khadir Gaye was in the dock on January 8, 2024 at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Isatou Sallah Mbaye for allegedly stealing mobile phones, money and dozens of abayas valued at fifty-seven thousand, three hundred dalasis (D57,300).

The accused was charged with stealing contrary to section 252 of the Criminal Code Cap 10:01 volume 3 of the laws of The Gambia 2009 but he pleaded not guilty to all the counts charged.


The particulars of offence revealed that the accused, Abdou Khadir Gaye, in December 2023 at Serrekunda in the Kanifing Municipality, stole two mobile phones marked iPhone XR 24gb and IPhone XR 126gb valued at D14,000 and D15,000 respectively, amounting to D29,000, being the property of one Elman Njie.

The offences charged further indicated that the accused, in November 2023 at Serrekunda, stole eight sets of women's clothes valued at D3,500(Three thousand five hundred dalasis), being the property of one Adama Laye.

The accused was further charged with stealing money in the sum of D20,000 from Ndegan Nylin in June and October 2023.Mr Gaye was also accused of stealing dozen of abayas valued at D4,800 being the property of one Ebrima Jobe at Serrekunda.

The accused stated in court that he did not steal from any one. “I did not steal from any of them. I am a businessman and I take articles from them, sell and refund their money,” he argued.

He said he was not able to refund the money to them because he had some issues due to the demolition of stalls on the roads.

The accused was, however, granted a bail of seventy-five thousand dalasis (D75,000) with two Gambian sureties who must be aged above 25.

The case was adjourned until 16 January 2023.
