Lawyer Lamin J. Darboe has formally announced his intention to contest The Gambia’s 2026 presidential election as an independent candidate, following his resignation from the United Democratic Party (UDP).

Darboe made the declaration during a live appearance on The Fix program on Teledal TV, where he confirmed that he is preparing to convene a press conference later this month to share further details of his candidacy.

The lawyer, who until recently was a member of the UDP, said he would seek the presidency as an independent but expressed his willingness to join a coalition of like-minded forces.

Darboe’s resignation and subsequent declaration mark a significant development within the country’s political landscape, as the field of potential contenders for the 2026 presidential race continues to expand.
