The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has launched a new initiative dubbed ‘Operation Sanity’ designed to help enforce local rules and keep the Kanifing area clean.

This initiative is meant to stop illegal sewage dumping, littering, and the improper disposal of harmful waste.

During a press conference at the KMC head office on 17 January 2025, Lord Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda explained that the operation focuses on reducing behaviours that negatively impact the community.

“This plan is based on our local laws, and it allows us to fine those who break the rules, especially when it comes to keeping our neighbourhoods safe and clean,” he emphasised.

He acknowledged that in the past, it was difficult to enforce these laws effectively. Therefore, the anti-littering teams have worked with other officials to create a strong plan for enforcement.

However, Mayor Bensouda outlined that the goal isn’t just to punish people; but to teach residents the importance of obeying these rules.

“Operation Sanity is about more than just enforcing laws; it’s about educating our community. We want everyone to understand that following these guidelines helps us all live together more peacefully,” he noted.

Moreover, he indicated that the operation will address issues like illegal use of streets and public areas, improper waste disposal, burning dangerous materials, removing sand and gravel without permission, and dealing with stray animals that obstruct roads.

“The purpose of Operation Sanity is not to clear the streets with help from the police or the government. We are not trying to remove vendors from the streets,” he clarified.

Mr. Bensouda stressed that the KMC is dedicated to meeting the needs of the community. He expressed concern that while the council works hard for the people, each vendor on the street must also keep their area clean, and those who fail to do so will face the consequences.

“If we find vendors breaking the rules, we will take action. We hope this initiative will encourage better behaviour and bring more order to our area,” he explained.

He concluded by calling on everyone in the Kanifing community to work together to promote cooperation and ensure a safe and friendly environment for all.
