Justice Mary Mam Yassin Sey passes away

The Judiciary of The Gambia mourns the loss of Honourable Justice Mary Mam Yassin Sey, a respected Justice of the Supreme Court who passed away on 20 August 2024 in the United Kingdom.

According to the Judiciary of The Gambia, Justice Mary’s untimely departure leaves a “significant void” in the judiciary, where she was admired for her dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to upholding justice.

“His Lordship Hassan B. Jallow, the Honourable Chief Justice, along with the entire Judiciary of The Gambia, deeply regret to announce the passing of Honourable Justice M.M. Sey. Justice Sey had been serving as a Justice of the Supreme Court since her appointment by the President in May 2017. Prior to that, she held positions as a High Court Judge of The Gambia and served as a Judge on Commonwealth Technical Assistance in Sierra Leone and Vanuatu,” a statement from the Judiciary states.

“Justice Sey’s distinguished career was marked by her high professional standards, competence, and courage in the administration of justice. Her contributions to the legal field both in The Gambia and beyond are well-acknowledged and appreciated.”

Born on March 21, 1952, in Banjul, The Gambia, Justice Sey pursued her early education at St. Joseph’s Convent and later completed her A-Levels at The Gambia High School. She continued her academic journey at Fourah Bay College, setting the foundation for her remarkable legal career.

In 1980, she married Abdoulie Sey, with whom she had two children, Anita-Yata Sey and Yusufa Sey. Her family, colleagues, and the broader community will forever cherish her memory and contributions.
