The competition which will be held throughout the length and breadth of the country, is named after Jawara’s late father Ba-Jaeja Jawara in recognition of his father's valuable contribution to the promotion of Islam in the country.
Five hundred students throughout the country are expected to compete in this year’s competition. The competition is expected to kick start on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Kerewan village, in the North Bank Region (NBR).
Officials said 32 Qu’ranic students in NBR will contest in the competition which will be followed by another competition in Janjangbureh involving 12 students. This will be followed by Gambisara the birthplace of Mr. Jawara, then Mansakonko and West Coast Region at the Supreme Islamic Council’s ground and the Masjid Bilal Boarding School respectively.
The founder and owner of the Masjid Bilal Boarding School Sheikh Essa Jawara, at the launching event, delivered the opening remarks, expressing hope for a brighter future for the younger people of the country in the realm of the Qu’ran.
Doctor Ali Jagana also underscored the importance of the occasion, saying: “Abubakary Jawara sponsored the programme due to his love for Islam and the country by extension. I think other business people should emulate the tremendous efforts Jawara is doing in the promotion of Islamic education in the country. We pray that Allah continues to guide and protect him so that he would continue to sponsor more of this kind program in the future.”
The opening ceremony which was graced by dignitaries from all walks of life particularly from the Islamic community was held at Imam Malick School at Kanifing.
Doctor Ousman Jah, an executive member of the Supreme Islamic School showered praises on Doctor Jawara for the sponsorship, adding: “This will go a long way in helping the young ones in the country to learn the Qu’ran.”
