Female presidential candidate Rose Wadimi remanded

Mrs Rose Wadimi, a female presidential candidate in final 20 presidential candidates was yesterday remanded after she was arrested on Saturday for having double nationality – French and Senegalese.

Meanwhile, the former Prime Minister of Senegal, Aminata Touré and Anta Babacar Ngom, arrested on Sunday during the demonstration of candidates protesting against the postponement of the presidential election decreed by President Macky Sall, are free.

The incident occurred while Aminata Touré was participating in the demonstration of candidates opposing President Sall's decision to postpone the presidential election. According to her own statements, she was apprehended as soon as she got out of her vehicle, without a clear explanation being provided to her as to the reasons for her arrest.

Anta Babacar was arrested and brutalized on Sunday, during a peaceful opposition demonstration, marking an unacceptable violation of freedom of expression and the right to protest.

Anta Babacar Ngom, after his release, calls on “the Senegalese authorities to respect the fundamental rights of all citizens and to promote an open and inclusive political climate. The protection of civil liberties is essential for the development of a fair democratic society.
