Jammeh names Gibba as standard-bearer for 2026 presidential election

Almameh Gibba

Former Gambian President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh has officially endorsed the  honourable Almameh Gibba as the No to Alliance Movement’s candidate for the December 5, 2026 presidential election.

The announcement was made during a mega rally on Saturday, which drew large crowds of supporters. Jammeh, who has lived in exile in Equatorial Guinea since leaving office in 2017, continues to exert influence over Gambian politics through loyalists and affiliated groups.

Gibba, the National Assembly Member for Foni Kansala, used the occasion to sharply criticize President Adama Barrow, describing him as a leader who “makes comedy.” He pledged that the movement would work to unite Gambians and address what he called growing political polarisation under the current administration.

“We are here to unite people. We see one and we want to salvage Gambia. We don’t know a leader who makes comedy and who inuend,” Gibba told reporters shortly after Jammeh’s endorsement.

The leader of the APRC No To Alliance, Hon. Almameh Gibba, has pledged that no foreign troops will remain in The Gambia if he is elected president.

He said his administration would prioritise national sovereignty and security sector reform to ensure that Gambian security forces are fully equipped and empowered to defend the country.

Political observers say Jammeh’s backing could significantly impact voter dynamics, particularly in rural constituencies where his support base remains strong. Gibba himself pointed to the turnout at the rally as evidence of the movement’s growing appeal, claiming that genuine supporters of Jammeh popularly known as “Babili Mansa" have rallied behind the No to Alliance cause.

As the race for State House intensifies, Gambians await further announcements from other political parties and alliances expected to declare their candidates in the coming weeks.
