IGP Seedy Muckhtar Touray made this remark during an official meeting with the Executive Director of the National Environment Agency (NEA) Dr. Dawda Badgie recently held at the Police Headquarters in Banjul.
In a collaborative intervention towards a lasting solution to environmental depletion, Dr. Badjie and IGP Touray assembled their common desire to collaborate efforts to fight against environmental odds in The Gambia. The conclave of these institutional heads focused on strengthening the already existing cooperation between the two institutions.
According to Dr. Badgie, his institution and the GPF will strengthen their collaboration and diversify their partnership in environmental protection and enforcement of its regulations. Some of the environmental instruments that need urgent enforcement and took center stage in the discussion include: Anti-Littering Regulation of 2007, Ban on Plastic Bag Order of 2015, Hazardous Chemicals Regulation of 1999 and Environmental Quality Standards Regulation 1999 among others.
Emphasising the police commitment to environmental protection and conservation issues, IGP Touray announced the establishment of a new Environmental Unit within the national police force dedicated to enforcing environmental laws and regulations. This tailored strategy to curb environmental menace in the country will no doubt immensely improve human health and the environment.
IGO Touray further called for positive attitudinal change from the populace towards the maintenance of what he described as our “dear environment” that provides us our livelihood support systems.
“The Gambia Police Force remains dedicated to collaborating with all partners and stakeholders committed to advance and maintain clean environment, peace and security throughout the nation,” IGP Touray assured.
