The acting secretary general of the Gambia Red Cross Society, Abdoulie Fye, has underlined tree planting as a clever and sure way to promote and enhance ecological tourism (ecotourism) across communities in The Gambia.

In the simplest sense, ecotourism simply translates to nature-oriented tourism that enhances environmental protection and conservation. It accords tourists and adventurers their desires for adventure without impacting the environment and wildlife, which even comes with the possibility of enhancing the natural environment and promoting conservation.

The GRCS highest ranking official, Mr Fye, made the statement during a tree-planting exercise in Gunjur recently, where he deliberated on the essence of trees and the forests.

“The more trees we plant,” he said, “the way we organize them can even promote tourism for the community and this can generate more income for the community. So these are all reasons why we are ensuring that we grow trees in the communities but also ensure they are nurtured.”

He disclosed that one of the aims of their interventions is to “build climate resilience in the communities".

Renowned for its golden beaches with swaying palm trees, the smallest nation in mainland Africa has more than just pristine beaches and cheerful sunlight to offer. The ecotourism potential of the nation is said to be astonishingly massive.
