The new board chair of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), Dawda Ndure, has reaffirmed the Authority’s clear vision under the leadership of the Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe.

“He has a clear and vital purpose to collect the money that helps to mitigate economic turbulence and the money collected pays for The Gambia public services which is spent by the government on schools, the health sector, roads, security and other essential services we rely on just to name a few,” he said.

Mr. Ndure disclosed this while delivering a speech during the recently concluded Taxpayers Award. He went further to assure GRA’s commitment to modernizing the tax and customs systems to ensure that the right taxes are paid while keeping the tax gap low and providing a level playing field for people and businesses.

“Your compliance besides being an obligation also complements the GRA compliance approach which is preventing non-compliance by improving policies, services and system,” he said.

He added that it also promotes good compliance by supporting their customs and increasing their understanding of what they need to do.

Mr. Ndure further expressed profound gratitude for the trust bestowed on him and other board members to guide the operational efficiency of GRA through the able leadership of Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe.

He cited that entrusting him with the responsibility to serve as the 4th chairman of the GRA was indeed a privilege and challenge, admitting the newly appointed board has taken the board membership of GRA at a challenging time – challenging in the sense that “revenue targets and expectations have been set astronomically high.”

He added that GRA is a family and “I can assure you that through the family spirit that exists we can do it.”

“As we transact into the implementation of our new cooperate, strategic plan 2020- 2025, I assure the public that under my leadership of the board of directors of the Gambia Revenue Authority, we will diligently focus on the implementation of the new cooperation strategic plan 2025- 2029 with the promise that key performance indicators will closely be under our watch on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis underpinned by transparency and accountability.”

Mr. Ndure also emphasised that a strong economy needs an effective tax system. GRA must be resourced properly for the job it has to do. “I am confident that with the support and dedication of the management and staff of the GRA, whose commitment to duty and country will be a driving force to help us achieve our strategic objectives, we shall not waver in cementing and crystalizing the strong teamwork and crucial relationship that exists between the board and Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. He added that they would ensure that such a calibration of shared vision results in making the GRA not only the most efficient institution in The Gambia but also within the sub region.
