The Deputy Commissioner General and Head of Domestic Taxes Ensa Jallow has spoken about the pivotal role of clearing and forwarding agents  in revenue mobilisation, saying they are among the most critical partners in revenue mobilisation.

He made the remarks while delivering an official opening statement at a seminar designed for the clearing and forwarding agents. The forum was organised by the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) on ITAS project funded by the World Bank.

The event, attended by various clearing and forwarding agents, was held at Ocean Bay Hotel on Tuesday 30 September.

DCG Jallow was confident that the ITAS system will bring a new era of transparency, accountability and efficiency in our tax administration. He added that this system will reduce compliance burden on taxpayers, minimise opportunities for fraud and corruption and ultimately enhance domestic revenue mobilisation for the continued development of the nation.

“However, for ITAS to be a resounding success, we need the buy-in and active participation of all our stakeholders. As clearing and forwarding agents and part of the business community, you are among our most critical partners in this endeavor. You are the trusted advisor to businesses and individuals. Your understanding and support for ITAS will be instrumental in ensuring a smooth and successful transition for the entire nation,” he affirmed.

According to DCG Jallow, the seminar has been specifically designed to engage the clearing and forwarding agents in a candid and constructive dialogue. “We want to share with you the mechanics of the ITAS systems, demonstrate its functionalities, and to address any questions or concerns you may have.”

He further reminded the participants that for many years, the Gambia Revenue Authority has been on a journey of transformation. “A Journey to modernize our tax and customs processes to enhance efficiency and to foster a culture of voluntary tax compliance.”

He acknowledged the pivotal role that the clearing agents play in the economic and fiscal landscapes of our society. “The clearing and forwarding business require a great awareness of not only the existing tax and customs laws and processes but also the instruments and technologies that underpin them.”

DCG Jallow stated that the introduction of this system will significantly reduce the time and efforts required to be tax compliant. “It will enhance transparency, minimize human error, and provide a clear, digital footprint for all transactions. This is the future of tax administration, a future that is digital, efficient, and built on the principles of service, transparency and integrity.
