Gov’t restores UTG facilities

The Government of The Gambia has announced immediate interventions to address University of The Gambia (UTG) students' concerns over catering, water, internet connectivity, and transportation.

Following a high-level stakeholder engagement held Saturday, Government reaffirms its commitment to a safe, conducive, and supportive learning environment that promotes academic excellence and student welfare.

The following measures take effect immediately:

Catering services will be restored on campus effective Monday, 26th October 2026. As an interim measure, previous caterers or alternative service providers will be engaged, while the University fast-tracks procurement of long-term service providers to prevent further disruption.

The University will immediately deploy additional water dispensers across campus to improve access to potable water. Government has further directed NAWEC and University Management to jointly identify and implement sustainable solutions to strengthen water supply infrastructure and improve reliability.

Recognising that reliable internet is critical for teaching, learning, research and innovation, the University will immediately engage telecommunications providers to improve connectivity across campus. The University will also maximise utilisation of the Gambia Research and Education Network (GAMREN) to expand access to global educational and research resources.

The Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) will deploy its full fleet of 20 buses effective Monday, 26th October 2026 to alleviate transportation challenges. Government will continue stakeholder discussions to review existing arrangements and ensure sustainable student mobility solutions.

Government remains fully committed to UTG student welfare and urges continued dialogue and constructive engagement among all stakeholders as implementation proceeds.
