Gambians react on social media effects

The use of social media with billions of subscribers globally has dominated worldwide attention. Its usage has many advantages for its various users. However, experts have agreed that it also has some serious side effects on its operators. 

To know what the public makes of these side effects, The Point went out and about to survey the opinion of some social media users within the Kanifing Municipality area.

The use of social media has gained much momentum in the twenty-first century, thanks to the invention of the internet and smartphones.  

Elaz Gumbo Lowe, said many people are of the notion that social media is more of a benefit than a consequence to its users. However, some experts have come to the conclusion that using social media can actually be harmful to some extent. 

Lowe stated that with social media, people can learn so many things and be able to improve their daily life activities.

Hamadi Jallow and Beyai Faye both described social media as a double-edged sword as it can be used both negatively and positively. They both urged social media users to make good use of the medium and stop using it negatively.

Madam Jallow said the level of effectiveness of social media has risen over the years.

She added that the positive usage of social media could be a very helpful tool in changing a person's life, but at the same time, it could trigger social unrest such as conflicts which can negatively impact the development of a society.
