The Gambia Police Force has announced the appointment of Demba Sowe, formerly Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police for Crime Management, as deputy Inspector General of Police following the statutory retirement of Momodou Sowe.

Mr Sowe is a native of Kampassa village, Foni Jarrol, West Coast Region. He enlisted into the Gambia Police Force in 1985 as a Police Constable, beginning a distinguished career in law enforcement that spans over three decades.

He pursued higher education at the University of The Gambia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (2013–2016) and later a Barrister-at-Law (BL) qualification (2016–2017). His education, combined with extensive professional training in The Gambia and abroad—including criminal investigation, traffic management, crime scene analysis, and peacekeeping, has shaped him into a seasoned law enforcement leader.

Throughout his career, DIG Sowe has served in several key leadership positions, including Officer Commanding Mansa Konko Division, Officer Commanding Anti-Fraud Squad, Commissioner of Administration, Commissioner of Interpol & CIIB, AIG Crime Management, and Director of Intelligence at the former National Intelligence Agency (NIA). He also represented The Gambia on international peacekeeping missions, most notably with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) from 2004 to 2006.

His outstanding service, leadership, and professionalism culminated in his elevation to Deputy Inspector General of Police in August 2025.

The Gambia Police Force and its leadership extend profound appreciation to former DIG Momodou Sowe for his dedicated service to duty and to the nation.

The Police High Command warmly congratulates DIG Demba Sowe on his well-deserved promotion and looks forward to his continued leadership in advancing the vision of a professional, accountable, and community-centered Police Force.

In a related development, Commissioner Abdoulie Sanneh has also been promoted to Acting Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Crime Management.
