Gambian farmers have expressed resounding support for President Adama Barrow and his administration following the recent distribution of 60 tractors across the country, a move widely hailed as a major step towards modernising the nation’s agricultural sector.

The beneficiaries, drawn from farming communities in all regions, described the initiative as a transformative moment for Gambian agriculture. Many referred to the delivery of the tractors as a “game-changer” that will significantly enhance crop production, improve rural livelihoods and reduce the burden of manual labour that has long characterised farming in the country.

“This is the kind of support we have been waiting for,” said Awa Gaye, a farmer from Kerr Jarga in Jokadou. “With these tractors, we can cultivate larger areas in less time and with greater efficiency. It’s a huge relief for us, especially as the rainy season approaches.”

She further said: “The tractors have come at the right time and will complement our efforts in increasing production and achieving better yields. We are committed to ensuring their proper use and sustainability.”

The tractor distribution forms part of a broader mechanisation drive spearheaded by the government, aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency and promoting sustainable farming practices. Officials say the initiative will not only increase productivity but also encourage younger generations to view agriculture as a viable and modern profession.

Agriculture remains the cornerstone of The Gambia’s economy, employing a significant portion of the population. However, limited access to modern equipment has long hindered progress in the sector. The introduction of these tractors is expected to address some of these challenges and pave the way for a more resilient and competitive farming industry.

Amara Tunkara from Suduwol village in the Kantora District of the Upper River Region (URR) underscored the significance of the tractors in their collective drive towards food self-sufficiency.

“For a long time, Gambian farmers have relied on manual labour to cultivate their farms, which is both exhausting and inefficient,” he said. “With the arrival of these tractors, that era is behind us now. This is the kind of support farmers truly need to thrive.”

Gannadou Jallow from Niamina Dankunku in the Central River Region (CRR) also commended the President for his “timely and impactful intervention”.

“The delivery of these tractors will make farming easier and more productive,” he said. “We are grateful to the government for recognising the challenges we face and responding with such meaningful support.”

Kaba Waggeh from Lamoi Village in the Kantora District of URR echoed similar sentiments, and urged fellow beneficiaries to use the tractors responsibly. “These tractors are a valuable resource, and we must ensure they are used for their intended purpose to boost agricultural productivity,” he said. “Let us not misuse them, but rather treat them as the tools that will help us build a better future for our communities.”

As the tractors begin to roll into fields across the country, there is a renewed sense of optimism among farmers. Many believe this marks the beginning of a new era, one where Gambian agriculture can thrive through innovation, investment and strategic support.
