Diplomacy is the way forward for Niger – President Tinubu

Aug 11, 2023, 11:50 AM

The president of Nigeria and chair of the regional group ECOWAS has said the military coup in Niger should be resolved "diplomatically and peacefully".

This comes after the latest diplomatic mission from the bloc to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum in Niger failed.

President Tinubu, who had previously hinted about a potential military operation in Niger, yesterday imposed further sanctions against the country. The sanctions target entities and individuals involved in last month's power takeover.

ECOWAS heads of states direct the regional chief of defence staff to activate the ECOWAS Standby Force immediately!

This is in readiness of possible deployment of ECOMOG to facilitate stabilisation intervention as a path towards restoration of constitutional/ democratic order!
