A statement made available to The Point by Ruben G. Abelenda, Ambassador of Cuba to The Gambia, reads: “On behalf of my country, my people and my government, I congratulate all Gambians on the occasion of celebrating the 59th anniversary of the independence of this sister West African state on February 18th.
“Cuba and The Gambia are two small nations united by blood, cultural and solidarity ties, which together promote peace, multilateralism, cooperation and fight to improve the living conditions of their populations, in the midst of the unequal and turbulent world in which we live today.”
The statement stated further that both countries have always maintained close ties of brotherhood translated into continuous collaboration in different spheres, especially in health.
“Mutual solidarity has also been a constant in bilateral relations, expressed in different international scenarios and events,” it adds, saying: “Furthermore, the gratitude between our two peoples and governments has been invariable, and we are sure it will continue to be this way in the future.”
Concluding, it states: “Cuba, as a senior official here stated, is the most African nation geographically outside of this continent, which is why we will celebrate with Gambians the new anniversary of its independence.”
