Scores of young people in the Central River Region (CRR) have voiced out their frustrations over lack of employment opportunities within the region.

CRR is one of the poorest regions in The Gambia with lack of job opportunities, proper healthcare facilities, schools, roads, access to clean drinking water, proper football pitches and other infrastructures.

Lack of all these continue to also seriously affect the lives and livelihood of people living in the region. Majority of its youthful population are formally unemployed and mostly dependent on farming.

Speaking to The Point, Musa Jallow, a youth from Changai Torro, pointed out that the region lacks job employment opportunities, skills training centers and other initiatives that can prepare some of them for the job market.

He added that most of them struggle to make ends meet daily with sources of income generation mainly through hard labour.

Essa Danso, a native of Tankong Kunda, said as CRR should have been one of the most developed regions in the country but said that it is negleted by government. He stated that government only remembers them when they need their votes during elections.

Pateh Jallow said that the lack of basic amenities within the region does not only affect young people but everyone living in the region.

Young people in Kuntaur, Wassu, Panchang, Upper Saloum District, Brikama Ba, Bansang and other places within the region who also spoke to our reporter expressed similar sentiments, while calling on the government to look into their plight and come up with initiatives that would uplift their living conditions, empower young people, ensure they are engaged and stay in the region to contribute to its development.
