Tourism Minister Abdoulie Jobe has described food as a bridge for strengthening relations between The Gambia and China, citing culinary exchange as a tool for tourism, cultural understanding and international cooperation.

He was speaking during China Day held as part of the 2026 West Africa Food Festival (WAFFEST), which gathered members of the Chinese community, the Chinese medical team and chefs from participating countries to celebrate Chinese cuisine and heritage.

The event brought together senior staff of the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI), National Centre for Arts and Culture, Gambia Tourism Board, students, and other guests.

Jobe said the celebration reinforced longstanding Gambia-China ties while extending friendship to other participating countries.

“Food is more than nourishment. It is a bridge between cultures, a symbol of friendship and a powerful tool for promoting tourism, cultural exchange and international cooperation,” he said, referencing Africa Chefs Alliance president Chef Shaun Smith.

He said the day showcased the creativity and skills of Chinese culinary professionals and demonstrated how food can strengthen relations between nations.

Jobe commended the organisers and the Embassy of China for supporting the initiative, noting its contribution to capacity-building and cultural exchange over the years.

He described relations between Gambian institutions and the Chinese mission as cordial and productive, thanked the outgoing ambassador and welcomed the incoming envoy, saying The Gambia looks forward to deeper cooperation.

For his part, China’s Deputy Ambassador to The Gambia, Zhao Shangsen, praised the Chinese community for integrating with local communities despite its small size.

He said China Day offered another opportunity to contribute to cultural exchange, including providing the meal enjoyed by guests.

Zhao also recognised the Chinese medical team at Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, which set up a booth at the festival to showcase traditional Chinese medicine and offer medicinal soup.

He thanked the team for its dedication and encouraged visitors to explore the display.

The deputy ambassador praised the Tourism Ministry, GTHI and the WAFFEST organising committee for making the festival possible, saying the community was pleased to contribute modestly to strengthening cultural ties between China, The Gambia and other countries.

Highlighting the global reach of Chinese cuisine, he adapted a popular Toyota slogan, saying wherever people travel, they are likely to find a Chinese restaurant.

The celebration featured cultural performances, including singing and dancing by two Chinese community associations.

China Day formed part of WAFFEST 2026, held from October 15 to 21 under the theme “Developing Skills, Changing Lives.” The festival brought together participants from over 30 countries to celebrate culinary heritage, promote professional exchange and explore tourism development and regional cooperation.

It added an international dimension to the festival, showing how cuisine and cultural activities can foster friendship and mutual understanding.
