The Gambian President His Excellency Adama Barrow on Tuesday dispatched Hon Minister of Tourism and Culture Hamat N.K. Bah as special envoy to President Macky Sall of Senegal. Minister Bah was received at the Presidential palace in Dakar by President Sall.

According to reliable sources, President Barrow has invited President Sall to be Chief Guest of Honour at the Bicentennial Commemoration of Georgetown scheduled for later this year.

A press release issued two weeks ago announced that Cabinet has approved the Bicentennial Commemoration of the settlement of Georgetown, now called Janjangbureh, and that president Barrow has instructed the National Organising Committee under the minister of Tourism and Culture to start work on the preparations for the festival which seeks to commemorate the arrival of the Liberated Africans on the Island in 1823, to start a new settlement of hope and prosperity.

In 2016, Banjul turned 200 years and the Bicentenary went almost unnoticed.

According to Government sources, President Barrow has attached much significance to celebrating Gambian culture and history for building national cohesion and strong economy, which is why he has taken this particular interest in the Georgetown Bicentennial celebrations.
