His Excellency President Adama Barrow has asked the Banjul City Council (BCC) to effectively collaborate with the central government to collectively pursue the development of the city.

Considering the fact that the central government pumped in over 90% of the funds used for the construction of the new BCC head office complex, the president said, prior to the completion of the construction, government should be given the invitation with a deserved respect to inaugurate the office.

President Barrow made this statement Monday night as Meet the People’s Tour reached climax at a meeting held in Banjul.

The tour, on the theme: ‘Together we can accelerate socio-economic growth and maintain peace and stability’, gave opportunities for communities in the various regions to raise their concerns and challenges with the head of state for possible interventions.

From the beginning of the 2022 tour to its ending in Banjul on Monday night, various concerns were raised. The concerns ranged from the allocation of monthly salaries for Imams, to the provision of potable water, electricity supply, health facilities with medication, agricultural support, good roads, artisanal fishing boost and skills training centers.

As far as development is concerned, President Barrow noted that the capital city needs to be well cleaned and developed with good infrastructures. He says there is no way the BCC could fully develop with the exclusion of the central government.

“I don’t want to see what happened at the KMC to repeat itself here at the BCC. After the completion of the construction, you need to invite the central government for discussion to set the date for the inauguration of the complex and then we return the keys to you for further operations,” he advised the BCC.

“We are the central government and we deserve maximum respect. We need to collaborate and collectively work together,” Barrow added, saying the Council has limited powers hence needs the support of the central government for development.
