After a heavy rainfall that resulted to the lost of properties within the Greater Banjul Area, President Adama Barrow yesterday visited affected victims and vowed to start a water canal project worth about US$46 million by December 2022.

Speaking during the visit, President Barrow said the water canal project that would commence in December will after its completion, solve the flood issue that the communities within the KM and WCR have been faced with over the years.

“The canal pipes will run from Lamin to Abuko and will connect to Bakoteh, Bundung to Kotu,” Barrow revealed.

Additionally, he said: “I don’t want to see anybody suffer in this country and that’s why I didn’t hesitate to come out and visit the people affected by the heavy rainfall.”

Many people are concerned about the lack of proper drainage system within the urban settlements of Kanifing Municipality and West Coast Region. After a long heavy pour, the Vice President formed a delegation comprising cabinet ministers and top government officials to assess the situation and find ways for long term redress.

The National Disaster Management Agency confirmed dead of two infants as a result of the flood disaster. Victims expressed dissatisfaction on how the government neglected their settlements to the extent of registering damages and loss of lives.
