While congratulating the members appointed to the Special Committee on May 15, 2025, Hon. Touma Njai acknowledged their qualifications and expressed confidence in their professionalism. However, she pointed out a glaring omission as no woman was selected to serve on the committee.
She emphasised that although the Standing Orders of the National Assembly do not explicitly mandate gender representation, past practice has consistently ensured the inclusion of at least one woman in committee appointments.
“The motion that created the committee clearly highlights the importance of gender inclusion, stating it should be applied as far as practicable. In this case, it is both practical and necessary,” she noted.
As a women’s advocate, she appealed to the Office of the Clerk mandated by Clause 4(1) and (2) to appoint support staff to address this oversight by considering competent women when assigning personnel to the committee.
“This is not a critique of the committee’s members or their abilities,” she clarified. “Rather, it is a call to reflect on our internal rules and uphold the principles of inclusivity that our Assembly stands for.”
Hon. Njai’s statement underscores the broader need to ensure women’s voices are represented in key national decision-making processes, especially on matters of national accountability and justice.
