Assembly approves appointment of Justice M.M. Njie

The National Assembly on Tuesday approved the appointment of Justice Omar M.M. Njie as a member of the Judicial Service Commission.

Moving the motion for the approval of M.M. Njie’s Judicial Service Commission before deputies, Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dawda A.A. Jallow, said it is grounded on the provision in line in Section 145 (1) and 145 (2) of the constitution.

“This esteemed Assembly is duly informed that the president appointed Justice Njie under Section 145 2 of the constitution following the recommendation of His Lordship Chief Justice. Therefore, in accordance with Section 145 2 b, I beg to move for the confirmation by the August Assembly,” the minister stated.

He dilated on the responsibilities of a member of the Judicial Service Commission such as; advising the president on judicial appointments, making recommendations on the terms of service for judges and other judicial officers and courts staff as well as enhancing the administration and efficiency of the courts as stipulated in Section 147 of the constitution.

Shedding light on the qualifications of Justice Njie, Minister Jallow highlighted that Justice Njie brings a wealth of experience gathered from both the BAR and the bench; having served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal of The Gambia from May 2017 to July 2020 and subsequently assumed the presidency of The Gambia Court of Appeal from August 2020 to May 2022. This was followed by his appointment as Justice of the Supreme Court of The Gambia from May 2022 to the present.

“Prior to these positions, Justice Njie served as a state counsel at the ministry of Justice and has been a lecturer on civil procedure at The Gambia Law School since 2014,” he added.

Majority Leader and Member for Kantora, Hon. Billy Tunkara, seconded the motion and submitted that he had made research about Justice Njie, and what he got proved that he is fit for the appointment. “He is well level headed and a man with integrity, honest and trustworthy. Therefore, he deserves the position.”

The Member for Busumbala, Hon. Muhammed Kanteh, said Justice Njie’s knowledge is not only limited to judiciary, adding the position given to him would enhance the judicial system effectively.
