According to count one of the statement of offence, Karanta was charged with obtaining goods by false pretence contrary to section 288 of the Criminal CodeCap 10:01 Volume 3 Laws of The Gambia 2009.
The particulars of offence indicated that, Karanta Darboe, on the 18th day of May 2023 at Serekunda in the Kanifing Municipality, he, with false pretence and intent to defraud, obtained two Tecno Spark 10 Pro Mobile Phones from Star GSM valued at D34,000 (thirty-four thousand dalasis), under the pretext of paying for the phones with US$500 (dollar notes), which representation he knew to be false at the time, thereby committed an offence.
On count two, the statement of offense indicated that Karanta Darboe did purchase with forged notes contrary to section 334 of the Criminal Code Cap 10:01 Volume 3 Laws of The Gambia 2009, and the particulars of offence indicated that Karanta Darboe on the 18th day of May 2023 at Serekunda in the Kanifing Municipality unlawfully had in his possession $500 (dollars) forged banknotes without authority, thereby committed an offence.
The accused requested for bail, saying the crimes he was charged with were bailable offence.
Representing the IGP, ASP Alpha Badjie recalled that the accused had been convicted on similar offence before Magistrate I. Janneh and was granted bail and while on bail he committed another offence.
ASP A. Badjie said that anytime the accused was granted bail he would commit another offence, adding that the accused’s operation had become a menace.
Keeping the accused in remand custody was the best for his personal security, ASP Badjie suggested, saying that there was hue and cry in town regarding the accused’s operation, which had been brought to the attention of the police command, that the accused was posing threat to the security of the public.
The case was adjourned till 22 June 2023.
