Alhaji Kalilu Singhateh finally laid to rest

Alhaji Kalilu Singhateh – a former MP and cabinet minister in the PPP government was laid to rest yesterday. He was 90.

Singhateh, a veteran politician passed away on Sunday 19 January 2025 in Banjul was interred at Jeshwang Cemetery. He came from a chiefly family in Badibu, and worked his way from an Audit Clerk into nationalist politics, Cabinet and international duties at UNESCO, according to historian Hassoum Ceesay.

Mr. Ceesay described him as “pioneer PPP politician, and minister, who attended the Gambia Independence Conference Talks at Marlborough House.”

“In retirement, Alhaji Kalilu continued to be an elder statesman. His insights into recent Gambian political history were always sought for. He was very generous with his time. Latterly, he was eager to pen his memoirs.”

“In his demise, we have lost one of the last participants in the heydays of Gambian nationalist politics,” Hassoum said of him.
