At least 80 students from the American International University West Africa Students (AiUWA) have been trained on mandates of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) at Sindola Lodge in Kanilai, West Coast Region.

The training was organised by GRA in collaboration with American International University West Africa Students as part of school’s celebrations week 2024.

The theme for this year is: ‘The Importance of Tax Compliance in Gambia’s Economy’.

John Gomez, director of Internal Audit at GRA on behalf of the commissioner general, said GRA values every opportunity to engage with stakeholders, taxpayers and the public to discuss its mandate and tax system as established by revenue laws.

According to him, the primary objective of the seminar was to inform and deepen the understanding of students on taxpayers obligation and right as well as the procedure for paying taxes and duties in The Gambia.

He cited that this engagement is also aligned with GRA Corporate Strategic Plan 2020-2024, specifically goal No 2.

“This aims to optimize client service delivery to improve customs relations and enhance our corporate image,” he noted.

“The facilitation will also highlight key reform initiative being implemented by the Authority to increase efficiency in the revenue collection process.”

According to Mr. Gomez, the engagement with AiUWA is a significant milestone. “It provides an invaluable opportunity for students to understand the importance of paying taxes and duties, and how this contribution is to the economic development of our beloved country.”

He further stated that the forum would also help dispel misconceptions and misunderstandings about the mandate of the GRA.

He revealed that GRA is currently in the process of replacing the existing Domestic Tax System – GAMTAXNET, with a more robust based system called the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS). “This will facilitate online payment and filing of tax returns, significantly reducing the burden on taxpayers,” he said.

Mr. Gomez thanked the GRA board and management as well as the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and development partners for their continued support to GRA’s reform agenda and taxpayers’ education programme.

The training was graced by the National Assembly for Foni Kansala Hon. Almami Gibba, alkalo of Kanilai village, and officials of GRA headed by Matty Senghor.
