The data from WAEC also revealed that out of the total registered students, 3, 667 students scored only one credit while 2, 049 got two credits. In addition, 1, 262 also scored three credits out of the nine subjects.
These figures are a reflection of failure by Gambian students compared to the previous WASSCE results. However, many Gambians have taken to social media, especially on Facebook to express dissatisfaction with the outcome of the results.
Some blamed the government for poor educational foundation and learning conditions and structures and others shifted attention to blame the teachers for their lack of expertise in their designated subjects.
During a cabinet retreat held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Center recently, Vice President Badara Joof stated that "the quality of education is as good as the quality of teachers. If the teachers are poorly educated, obviously the students will be poorly educated and it has a contagion factor on the society.”
Recently Gambian students, especially middle school students were seen in several non educational practices, using the social media for expressing non-academic exercises during and after school hours.
This aroused concerns and many turned to blame the students for their lack of focus and seriousness on learning.
"A total of 15,360 candidates from 136 Senior Secondary Schools registered for the examination – which represents a decrease in candidature of 5.38% over the previous year’s figure of 16,234 candidates. Out of the 15,360 candidates that registered for the examination this year, 6,319 (41.14%) were male, while 9,041 (58.86%) were female," WAEC revealed.
