Ahead of the local government elections slated for April and May, two candidates have officially withdrawn from participating.

Nominated under the People's Progressive Party ticket to contest for Gambisara ward in Basse, Musa Jobtarteh has withdrawn his candidature from the councillorship elections of 15th April.

The Independent Electoral Commission has confirmed the acceptance of his withdrawal by its returning officer for Basse, Lamin Cham.

Also, the United Democratic Party's Amat Cham, who was nominated to contest for Njau Ward in Janjangbureh, tendered his withdrawal from the councillorship elections before the IEC.

The IEC returning officer for Janjangbureh, Ahmadou Taal, has duly accepted his withdrawal, the IEC confirms.

Meanwhile, it could also be recalled that the National People’s Party had chosen Kebbe Dem of Dongoroba to run for the chairmanship of the Mansa Konko Area Council in the Lower River Region following the withdrawal of Sajar Sarr, who was declared the winner of the NPP primaries in LRR last month.

The forthcoming local government elections are anticipated to be one of the hottest battles for political dominance in councils across the country.

It could be recollected that 367 candidates including 54 females have been nominated to contest, according to the IEC.

Two hundred and ninety-nine (299) were nominated under the ticket of various parties while 68 are independent candidates, following the conclusion of the nomination process. Four persons with disability (PWDs) have also been nominated.

The elections will be held on the 15th April for aspiring councillors and 20th May for candidates aspiring to be chairpersons and mayors.
