Lamin Jammeh, who earlier declared his intention to run for the seat, has withdrawn his candidature. The Returning Officer for Brikama Administrative Area, Anthony Robert Secka has duly accepted the withdrawal of Lamin Jammeh, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirms.
In the same vein, Bakary Saibou Sanneh, an independent candidate, has also withdrawn. Bakary was backed by the 'No To Alliance' and tendered his nomination papers last week before the Independent Electoral Commission in Brikama as a standby, so that in case Ibrahim J.S. Sanneh's nomination was unsuccessful, he would run for the seat.
Ibrahim J.S. Sanneh, the first candidate backed by the 'No To Alliance', had difficulties in obtaining his leave letter (a requirement for nomination) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he works.
Ibrahim J.S. Sanneh has, however, obtained and submitted his leave letter to the IEC and has successfully got nominated. It is in this regard that Mr Bakary Saibou Sanneh has withdrawn.
The Brikama Area Council is one of the most important councils in the country administering the affairs of one of the most important and the largest region in The Gambia.
Dozens have tendered their official nominations to run for the chairmanship of the BAC, with three candidates standing out.
The three candidates are Seedy Ceesay, the candidate for the governing National People's Party; Yankuba Darboe, a prominent lawyer and candidate for the main opposition United Democratic Party, and Ahmad Gitteh, who goes independent after severing ties with the governing NPP.
