The role of Customs extends far beyond just revenue collection.

There is much more to that. Apart from their role in trade facilitation, ensuring the smooth movement of goods across borders, they also play a key role in economic growth and development of nations. We all know that administering Customs is one of the challenging tasks in this day and age.  Around the globe, countries are changing rapidly amid advances in technology and new innovation and we can’t afford to lag behind.

A total of 17 senior officers of Nigerian Customs are currently in the country for an official study tour. The visit is not only laudable but would go a long way in strengthening ties between the two countries.

The Gambia and Nigeria are not new to assisting one another when it comes to sharing of knowledge. From judges, teachers to other areas, our Nigerian brothers are always ready to share with their Gambian counterparts.

The visit by these Customs officers to learn best practice from their counterpart The Gambia Customs Administration, is a great development. We live in an environment where the world has developed into a global village.

Therefore, sharing of timely and relevant knowledge and expertise go a long way in enhancing quality service in our respective institutions.

The advent of new tech and innovation is a blessing in disguise. However, it also comes with corresponding challenges which include a surge in illicit activities in the country. To be able to curb or counter illicit activities, there is a need for customs officers to be aufait with issues at hand to executive their duties effectively.

We are optimistic that during the visit, participants and even their host, would learn and hone new skills and knowledge relevant to work. We have to adapt to the changing developments sweeping across the globe.

Recently, the Customs have embarked on numerous  transformations and reforms initiatives designed to meet international standards. We commend the top management for their foresight in ensuring that change occurs.

This knowledge sharing trip couldn’t have come at a better time than now, when institutions are working to adapt to the fast changing developments taking place.

However, sharing of knowledge contributes to a sustained competitive advantage through its application and contributes to the development of institutions.

We welcome the visiting delegation to The Gambia and challenge them to pursue all existing avenues and be innovative. +
