Happy Christmas in advance!

Dec 23, 2022, 12:08 PM | Article By: EDITORIAL

Christmas is here again. The last week of every December is an important date in the Christian calendar.

December 25th globally is celebrated as Christmas: the birth of Jesus Christ. In the Christian faith, there's no other more joyous celebrations than the birth of Jesus Christ, an event as equally important as his death and resurrection.

According to Christian faith, it was approximately; in the year 300 A.D. when it was determined that the birthday of Jesus will be celebrated on this day, and has been celebrated since then

The festive period is marked in the form of handing out gifts, display of various decorations, exchange of greetings cards, church sermons and special meals among other outdoor festivities.

It is a beautiful and joyous season, a one full of goodwill and love to all persons, a time of sparkling lights, extravagant decor, melodious music and good food.

Indeed, it is a colourful event in which people meet, especially those who miss each other for years. In the villages, the day is one of the most eventful and family reunion events, where families meet and exchange pleasantries.

It is also a moment for stock-taking, self reflections and meditation on the importance of this fest.

Traditionally, what makes the festive period more fun is Father Christmas - known as Santa Claus in some areas. This is a popular mythological figure in many countries associated with the bringing of gifts for children.

In the Gambia, the day is widely observed by Christians alongside their Muslim brothers, a move that symbolises the inter religious tolerance that exists from time immemorial. The display of different cultural performances by youths especially in the urban settlements is enough to draw a conclusion.

To our Christian brothers and sisters, let us remember those who live and are plagued with difficulty and distress. We should always put in mind that the message of Christmas is one of joy and hope that all can understand and appreciate.

Yes, we are all creatures of God Almighty but some have plenty, while others have less, but still find a way – sometimes through the generosity of strangers – to make the day special. But even those with little create their own cherished traditions.

It is a hard fact that so many among the followers of the faith graciously opened their hearts, and their pocketbooks, to those in need during this holiday season.

Therefore, we must bear in mind that our communities are better, thanks to the outpouring of generosity of others. Let’s try to cling on to that spirit of caring and sharing to make the world a better place.

The Gambia is a shining example when it comes to inter-religious tolerance. Let's nurture and always promote that unique inter-faith coexistence for the good of the country.

For instance, if you visit The Gambia during the month of December, you would think the entire citizens are Christians, whereas if your visit coincides during the Muslim feast like Eid, you would think that everyone is a Muslim.

Whatever your traditions and however you are celebrating, we wish you all a merry Christmas in advance.
