GOOD MORNING MR PRESIDENT: Land issues, stranded Gambian migrants

Jun 10, 2024, 11:20 AM

Mr President, we have noticed some policy decisions that are being taken to managing our lands effectively, with the Ministry of Lands setting up a task force for proper land allocations in places like Kamalo,  Cape Point and other lucrative areas.

Mr President, it is also important to consider utilising the massive lands in Kamalo and Cape Point for more productive use. Developments like industrial estate for factories, construction of Government ministries and buildings for public and private offices can also be planted there. Government is noted to be spending huge amounts of money for rent proposes across the country. This is unsustainable; thus, it will be good to use the land at Kamalo and Cape Point for the construction of government Ministries, Departments and Agencies. Besides Kamalo and Cape Point, strategic areas like Kotu and other places can also be properly utilised for development purposes.

Mr President, relating to land also, there are many land cases which need proper adjudication since land issue is a universal problem across the country.

In most cases, the Alkalolu, and estate agents/agencies are the architects of the problems, since a lot of fraudulent and dubious games are carried out in land deals. The land task force should effectively address these land controversies.

The proper management of our lands is paramount and most be done well.

Mr President, another issue of serious concern is the increasing illegal migration of Gambian youth to other countries.  Government should therefore try very hard to tackle illegal migration. Currently, many Gambian youths are reportedly stranded in countries like Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and some parts in the Middle East.

Government should therefore work with institutions like IOM - International Organisation for Migration - to rescue and repatriate those stranded Gambian youth back home, since they are undergoing severe maltreatment.

Mr President, in the effort to solve this phenomenon, government should encourage more investments and creation of additional jobs and training centres to engage our youths in order to curb illegal migration, alleviate their suffering, and aid their struggle to lead a prosperous life.

Good Day!
